What to see and do in Kefalonia


Argostili

Argostoli is the capital of Kefalonia and is definitely worth visiting! The city is the ideal place to stay as it is located in close proximity of numerous pretty villages and great beaches. While in the town, there are quite a few interesting sights to visit. The Archaeological Museum of Argostoli, located a few blocks from the central square, contains an intensive collection of Mycenaean artifacts.

 

Myrtos Beach

Myrtos is the most famous beach of Kefalonia and is located 30km north of Argostoli. It is regarded as one of the best beaches in Greece and is one that is most photographed. The beach has a semi-circular shape and is surrounded by steep cliffs and lush vegetation.

 

Melissani Lake

Melissani Lake, which is situated just outside Sami, is one of the most significant places for the visitor in Greece. The cave is B-shaped with two chambers separated by land in the center. The roof of one of the halls caved in long ago letting through the sunlight. The best time to visit this cave is at noon when the sun is overhead and the whole cave suddenly lights up creating a magical impression.

 

Ainos Forest

Kefalonia is known for its beautiful forests and mountains. Mount Ainos is the highest mountain in the area and is well known for its dense forest of Kefalonian fir trees. The Ainos Forest is one of the most beautiful places on the island. The area has been designated as a National Park. The forest is also ideal for exploring on foot or hiking.
