There is definitely something special about Athens in September. It's the best time of year to visit because the weather during this fall month is still pleasant and sunny days are guaranteed. The temperatures are not as high as through June to August so you can enjoy the agreeable climate on your walks and discoveries.

During the last weekend in September, the archaeological sites and museums are free for entry and the archaeological sites still remain open until late.

Crowds are less so you can take full advantage of the city's shops and restaurants, which reopen in September when locals return to the city after their summer break.

Stroll down Plaka's narrow streets and visit the Acropolis, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, without having to make way through the hordes of tourists.

What to wear when you visit Athens in September

The roads are often stony so comfortable closed flats are a must. Wearing high heels when sightseeing is not only impractical but also banned because of the damage they may cause.
